Teaching Experience
I have been teaching U.S. environmental history, U.S. urban history, and recent American history since 2001. In addition to the courses listed below, I have directed individual projects and independent readings on the history of urban planning, on the policies of New Urbanism, and on issues of environmental racism and environmental justice in American cities. My students often teach me as much as I teach them; the outstanding first-year students in my very first seminar on the body in environmental history at Oberlin College were among the inspirations for my October 2003 article in Environmental History, "Reflections from Six Feet Under the Field: Dead Bodies in the Classroom."
